What good is a fire door if there’s no fire behind it?

Duh.

Most of the world is carpeted. And one day, we will do the cleaning.

F ireproof ( or at least fire-resistant) carpeting?

If that met the   ASTM E84 rating for fire spread and smoke developed I would be shocked. Definitely   would be a game changer laying that carpet everywhere.

All a fire door is really meant to do is slow the spread of a fire, it doesn’t mean what’s behind it can’t be burned. You could have both sides piled high with loosely-packed tissue and oily rags, the purpose of the fire-rated door is just to make sure that the fire on one side doesn’t make it to the other side for however long is marked on the plate by the hinges .

That carpet looked 1980s vintage......does that leave  anything to the imagination?

If true then I now know why that might be there. Asbestos. It wasnt until the late 80's that it started getting really phased out. Basically fireproof and a nightmare and potentially cost prohibitive to try and remove.

I’ve seen plenty of carpeted fire stairs in hotels, too; not sure if comparable.

I forgot to check, but I hope the door frame had a fireproof floor plate to actually stop a fire from passing  under the door .
